The Church Has Got Talent
1 Corinthians 12: 4-7 Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. v:5 And there are diversities of administrations, but the same Lord. v: 6 And there are diversities of workings, but the same God who works all things in all. v:7 But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit to profit everyone.
Colossians 3:15 And let the peace of Christ rule in your heart, to which also you were called in one body, and be ye thankful. v:16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly; in all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts unto God. v:17 And whatsoever you do, in word or in deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.
Tonight my wife and I had a very enjoyable evening. I rarely watch television but she really enjoys relaxing in front of the TV and so I decided to join her and just relax for a few minutes which, for me, is more work then work. However, as we sat there enjoying our time together we sat and watched ‘America’s Got Talent’. I have watched this program before and I am always amazed at the vast human resources and gifting’s that astound the judges as person after person takes their place on the stage before all the world and airs their God given talents. Young and old are given the opportunity to pursue their dreams of finally being discovered as they belt out songs and play instruments of every type. Choirs and solo’s, dance and acrobats, all are welcome if their talents are genuine and their desires are pure, they all will be seen again as they compete for the ultimate prize.
As a man of God I can say that one of the things that has most bothered me in my sojourning’s here on planet blue ball is the failure of the church at large to tap into the vast resources that exist in the body of Christ. This past Friday night at our gathering it was my desire to give others a time to come and share their hearts and reveal some of their hidden abilities to the rest of us. I think that one reason the church gets stale is because we keep hearing the same ol’ stuff instead of allowing the Holy Spirit to stir up new perspectives and gifts in our midst. I never want the sound of my voice to become bothersome so sometimes I just shut up for a season and I listen. It is amazing what I hear as others who would not normally step out of their comfort zone begin to open up and reveal the mysterious workings of God in their hearts and in their families. Maybe I glean this quality from my years in prison as I observed so many men with so many talents and because of their economic challenges or family circumstances they will spend the rest of their lives behind bars, never to be discovered? My soul aches over the loss of their potential contributions to our society and our churches and I cannot help but hear the Saviors tears hitting the floor because many are sitting on the sidelines untapped as to their God given talents. Christ never intended any church to be a one man show.
We are a body and within the body their are various parts and every part is vital to the whole. When we stray from giving others the opportunity to be discovered by the saints as they step out in faith then we become stale as the day old bread that fell from heaven. Our message can become wormy and filled with the false promise of revival and like clouds that have no rain, we die in the desert of self effort instead of letting God infuse our steeples with new life. Music and song should fill our chapels and stringed instruments while poems and testimonials abound in our gatherings. Art, finance, administrations, event planning, and youth leaders, these are all necessary to the growth of a body and critical for the success and purpose of the church. Everyone has something to contribute and it is a grief to God that we take the flocks money for our fancy buildings while we fail to give them avenues in which they may truly make a contribution that will do far more for our church growth then dropping twenties in the basket. It is a spiritual malady in this country and one that must be soon addressed if we are to have any real hope of revival!
The true church of Jesus Christ is a powerful organism that has life and breath that stems from the life of the Holy Spirit moving, creating, shifting with the needs of the moment. One of the most necessary qualities of a pastor is to see the ways in which God is moving in the saints and then open the door, not for the person being used, but for God himself as He manifest’ Himself through that person. We are the body of Christ and if we are to have victory in this day, it is time for every person to get involved and as the war rages on, every hand must be on deck fighting the good fight. I had tears in my eye’s watching that program tonight as the most unlikely souls stepped into their destiny and blessed countless lives with their unique abilities. I wonder what Christ must see as both believer and church step into our eternal purposes and myriads of lives are touched the world over because someone was willing to give the saints a chance to be all they were ordained to be? It is time the church stops fleecing the saints and starts utilizing their true wealth which is the hidden dream of glorifying God while blessing the community of believers. The church has got talent and I would love to see more of it! When we get to that point, revival will be eminent and Christ’ return will soon follow. Is this not the ultimate prize we compete for?
